As we begin this Memorial Day weekend, I am reminded of the service of my father to this great country and I am grateful for all those who have sacrificed so much in service to the United States. Please join me in this reflection of thanks.
A Quick Update:
On Tuesday evening, May 19, 2015, the Portland Board of Education appointed Dr. Mary Anne Morris as the Director of Student Services for the Portland Public Schools. Dr. Morris has many years of experience as an educator and administrator in the area of special education and pupil services for the Springfield, Massachusetts Public School District. I am convinced that she will bring a student-centered vision to our district as well as a wealth of experience. Furthermore, I know she will work hard to ensure that Portland’s educational services and our students’ learning opportunities will prepare them to exceed their individual potential so as to be contributing members of our community regardless of the obstacles they may face.
Dr. Morris received her Doctorate in Education from the University of Massachusetts and has recently served as the Chief of Pupil Services in Springfield. She has over 35 years’ experience in special education. I look forward to her knowledge, her expertise, and her guidance in the Portland Public Schools. Dr. Morris will begin her work in Portland in early August.
I am also pleased to announce the appointment of Ms. Holly Russo as the District Data Specialist for the Portland Public Schools. Holly has been an employee since 2001, serving in many capacities such as paraprofessional, bookkeeper, and most recently as the Administrative Assistant to the Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology. Holly is a familiar face in the district in her role as a member of the Technology Team. She has assisted staff with technology needs including the student data management system, providing computer software training, and troubleshooting when required.
We are excited to have Holly join the Central Office team and know she will do an outstanding job in her new role. Please join me in congratulating her on this achievement!
I have made a decision on the hiring of a high school principal and will present the finalist to the Board of Education on Tuesday evening (6:00 PM) for an appointment. A formal announcement will be made next week.
My warmest wishes to you for a wonderful Memorial Day holiday weekend.
